H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim met with Mr. Shinichi Kitaoka, President of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at the JICA Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan today.

Minister Asim and President of JICA exchanged views on various programs steered by JICA in the Maldives and on future collaboration between Maldives and JICA. Minister Asim noted with appreciation JICA’s programmes as one of the most successful programmes that have contributed to socieo-economic development in the Maldives.

Foreign Minister Dr. Asim was accompanied by H.E. Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary Bilateral, and H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Uvais, Ambassador-designate of Maldives to Japan, Mr. Ahmed Fazeel, Director, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Mr. Adam Hamid, First Secretary and Mr. Mohamed Thahseen, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Maldives in Japan.

Foreign Minister H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim met with H.E. Mr. Wataru Takeshita, President of Japan-Maldives Friendship League today.

During the meeting, the Foreign Minister thanked Japan-Maldives Friendship League members for their unwavering support to advance the friendly relations between the two countries. Minister Asim and the League’s President Takeshita noted the increased people-to-people contact, including the growth of trade and investment between two countries over the years.

Minister Asim noted with appreciation the role played by the JOCV volunteers and thanked Government of Japan for the assistance provided through JICA over the years. H.E. Mr. Wataru Takeshita was accompanied by Mr. Yoshitaka Shindo, Secretary General; Ms. Yuko Obuchi, General Secretary and three additional members Mr. Yasuhide Nakayama, Mr. Hiroshi Mitsubayashi and Mr. Taimei Yamaguchi, Member of Japan-Maldives Friendship League.

Foreign Minister H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim met with H.E. Mr. Masaharu Nakagawa, Minister of the Environment of Japan at the Ministry of Environment of Japan this afternoon.

During the meeting both Ministers noted the positive developments taking place throughout the world to mitigate and adapt to the risks of climate change. The two ministers discussed further cooperation within the context of Japan’s Joint Credit Mechanism (JCM) on reduction of low carbon emission and renewable energy. Minister Asim thanked the Government of Japan for the numerous assistance extended to the Maldives over the years to promote the clean energy in the Maldives.

Foreign Minister H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim arrived in Tokyo today on an official visit to Japan. During this visit Foreign Minister Dr. Asim will meet Minister Taro Kono, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Minister Masaharu Nakagawa, Minister of Environment, President of JICA and Mr. Wataru Takeshita, President of Japan-Maldives Friendship League to further enhance the existing close ties both countries have enjoyed over the years.

Minister of Foreign Affairs is accompanied by H.E. Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary Bilateral, and Mr. Ahmed Fazeel, Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
