The Government of the Republic of Maldives and the Government of Japan, with a view to further developing friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries, signed an Exchange of Notes this morning.

At the ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs and His Excellency Kazumi Endo, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Maldives, signed the Exchange of Notes on behalf of the two respective countries. The signing ceremony was also witnessed by His Excellency Kentaro Sonoura, Special Advisor of the Prime Minister of Japan, who is on a one-day official visit to the Maldives.

Under the terms of the Exchange of Notes, the Government of Japan will extend   to the Government of Maldives, a grant of three hundred million Japanese Yen (¥ 300,000,000) for further promoting the economic and social development of the Maldives. This grant will be utilized towards strengthening oil spill prevention and response, to reduce harmful environmental impact of oil spills in the Maldives.

In his remarks during the ceremony, Foreign Minister Shahid thanked the Government and the people of Japan for the generous assistance. The Minister also highlighted that it is through the genuine efforts to understand the vulnerabilities and the development needs of the Maldives, that Japan has become and continues to remain as one of the most important development partners of the Maldives, a steadfast supporter and a key partner of Maldives’ social and economic development.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by officials from the Ministry of Defence, the Coast Guard, Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and officials from the Embassy of Japan in the Maldives.

Vice President Faisal Naseem has stated that Japan has been one of the most important contributors to the Maldivian economy. He made this remark while speaking at the function held to mark Japan’s National Day. 

Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Naseem conveyed his greetings and best wishes to His Majesty the Emperor of Japan and the friendly people of Japan, on the occasion of Japan’s National Day.

The Vice President also highlighted the age-old bonds of friendship between the Maldives and Japan, underlining decades of trust, understanding and mutual respect. In this regard the Vice President underscored the areas Japan has contributed towards the development of the Maldives.

In his speech, Vice President Naseem also expressed hopes of continuing working together on issues of mutual interest bilaterally and multilaterally, and assured of the administration’s confidence that the relationship between the two countries to reach new heights.

Malé; Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid met Mr. Eui-Bae Kim, the Honorary Consul of Maldives in Busan, Republic of Korea, this afternoon.

During the meeting held at the Ministry, Minister Shahid commended Honorary Consul’s contribution in strengthening the people- to- people contact between Maldives and South Korea, and thanked the Honorary Consul for the assistance provided to Maldivian students in South Korea and visiting Maldivians to South Korea.

Minister also expressed his keen interest to strengthen the existing ties and having closer collaboration between the two countries.

Foreign Minister Shahid was accompanied by Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary Bilateral at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Lauza Ali, Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

His Excellency Wataru Takeshita, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Japan and Member of the House of Representatives of Japan paid a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid today. Mr. Takeshita is also the President of the Japan-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship League and is in the Maldives on invitation from President Ibrahim Solih to attend the Presidential Inauguration Ceremony that was held on 17 November 2018. Mr. Takeshita has previously visited the Maldives in 2014.


During the meeting, Foreign Minister Shahid and the Special Envoy discussed ways to further strengthen the relations between the two countries in areas of mutual interest. The Foreign Minster emphasised on the historic and lasting relations between the two countries that is founded on a mutual understanding of trust and friendship. The Foreign Minister also recognised and thanked the Government of Japan for the development assistance provided by Japan which is featured prominently throughout the development journey of the Maldives.


The Special Envoy was also accompanied by His Excellency Masayoshi Yoshino, Member of House of Representatives, who recognised and thanked the Government of the Maldives for its assistance to Japan during the 2011 earthquake.


The resident Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, His Excellency Kazumi Endo and other senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan was also present in the meeting.


Foreign Minister Shahid was accompanied by His Excellency Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary Bilateral at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Fathimath Najwa, Joint Secretary, and Ms. Zeena Mohamed Didi, Assistant Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
