On his official visit to Japan, this evening the Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim and his delegation visited the Tokyo Skytree.

Tokyo Skytree, with a height of 634 meters, was built in 2012 as the primary television and radio broadcasting tower, and is one of the most popular landmarks of Tokyo. It is the tallest structure in Japan and the second tallest in the world at the time of its completion.

Maldives and Japan have been cooperating on establishing Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting Terrestrial (ISDB-T) television network under Japanese grant assistance. The ISDB-T television network is a Japanese standard for the transmission of digital television over air. It will make information more accessible to residents and reduce information disparities among islands. The initiative will also advance speedy communication of emergency warning information for disaster preparedness.

Foreign Minister Dr. Asim was accompanied by H.E. Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary Bilateral, and H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Uvais, Ambassador-designate of Maldives to Japan, Mr. Ahmed Fazeel, Director, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Mr. Adam Hamid, First Secretary and Mr. Mohamed Thahseen, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Maldives in Japan.

Under the Japanese Economic and Social Development Cooperation Program, Government of Maldives and Government of Japan signed a grant assistance agreement of JPY300 million for the Health Sector of Maldives.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim signed the Exchange of Notes on behalf of the Government of Maldives and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan H.E. Mr. Taro Kono signed the Exchange of Notes on behalf of the Government of Japan.

The signing ceremony was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan this morning. At the press conference held after the signing ceremony, Minister Asim thanked the Government of Japan for their generous support and continuous assistance to the Government of Maldives. Both ministers noted the two countries as close friends that share a long-standing friendship based on mutual respect and understanding.

The Maldives Embassy in Tokyo held a Maldives Business Reception for the Japanese businesses involved in the tourism industry, today to coincide with the ongoing official visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Asim. Leading tour operators and travel agents and airline representatives in Japan were among the attendees.

Minister Asim graced the occasion as the chief guest. Speaking at the reception, Minister Asim spoke of the close bilateral relations, particularly touched on the growing people to people contact between the two countries. In this regard, Minister Asim highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation in the field of tourism, and activities through the Commercial Unit of the Embassy.

The Ambassador of Maldives to Japan His Excellency Mr. Ibrahim Uvais in his remarks stated that one of the major roles at the Embassy of Maldives in Japan is to help facilitate business to business connections between Maldivian and Japanese companies.

His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Khaleel, Secretary Bilateral, and Mr. Ahmed Fazeel, Director, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives also attended the reception.

The First round of Maldives-Japan Policy Dialogue between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan today.

During the consultations, the two countries discussed cooperation in areas of mutual interest including development, climate change, tourism and investment among others. The two countries also exchanged views on the ongoing Japanese government funded development projects.

The Maldives delegation was headed by Secretary, Bilateral H.E. Mr. Ahmed Khaleel and Japanese delegation was headed by the Director General at Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr.Takizaki. Secretary Bilateral was accompanied by H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Uvais, Ambassador-designate of Maldives to Japan, Mr. Ahmed Fazeel, Director, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Mr. Adam Hamid, First Secretary and Mr. Mohamed Thahseen, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Maldives in Japan.
