The Ambassador of Maldives to Japan H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Uvais attended and addressed the Wave Energy Project Reporting Session organized by Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST).

Experiments for the project began in May this year at Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma at South Male Atoll, Maldives in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment of Maldives and the Government of the Maldives. The goal of the project is to harness wave energy using affordable turbines situated at the shoreline surf. OIST Professor Tsumoru Shintake’s goal of his “wave energy converter” is to overcome the limitations of the current designs which are expensive and has numerous shortcomings.

Currently the tests are being conducted through two mini-turbines. Before the year ends, they will be replaced by full-scale prototype models and within two years, provide energy for at least a third of the island.

In his speech, the Ambassador highlighted the importance of the experiment to find a renewable form of energy that is affordable and reliable to replace the Maldives’ dependency on fossil fuels. With Maldives as a symbol of climate change, the Ambassador expressed his hope that if the experiment is successful, wave energy will pave the path for the country to lead the rest of the world by example in creating a sustainable future.
