Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Abdulla Shahid met with Minister of Environment of Japan, His Excellency Yoshiaka Harada, this morning in Tokyo.

At the meeting held at the Ministry of Environment of Japan, Minister Shahid recognized and commended the role of Japan in the global arena in pushing for action against climate change. The Minister further thanked the Government of Japan, for the continuous assistance to the Maldives in building the resilience and disaster risk reduction of Maldives.

Japan reassured commitment to continue assisting the Maldives and both ministers discussed possibility of new projects in areas such as coastal protection, water supply networks and sanitation mechanism.

Minister Shahid was accompanied by the Minister of Finance His Excellency Ibrahim Ameer, and the Minister of Economic Development His Excellency Uz Fayyaz Ismail, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Ahmed Khaleel, His Excellency Ibrahim Uvais, Ambassador of Maldives to Japan, and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister of Foreign Affairs His Excellency Abdulla Shahid has departed to Tokyo, Japan, today on his first official visit to Japan since assuming office. 

During this visit, Minister Shahid will meet with His Excellency Taro Kono, Minister of Foreign Affairs and other high level officials of the Government of Japan, and hold discussion on further strengthening the historic and close bilateral ties between the Maldives and Japan.


Minister Shahid is accompanied by the Minister of Finance His Excellency Ibrahim Ameer, the Minister of Economic Development His Excellency Fayyaz Ismail, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs His Excellency Ahmed Khaleel, and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Special Advisor to the Japanese Prime Minister, Member of Parliament His Excellency Mr. Kentaro Sonoura, has paid a courtesy call on President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. The meeting was held this afternoon at the President’s Office.

During the call, the President welcomed Mr. Kentaro Sonoura to the Maldives and thanked him for visiting the country. Shedding light on the strong bilateral ties that exist between the Maldives and Japan, President Solih stated that ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1967 both countries have enjoyed mutual trust and understanding, and expressed interests to further strengthen the existing relations between the two countries.

Furthermore, President Solih extended gratitude to the Japanese government for their continuous support and assistance provided to the people of Maldives.

Speaking during the call, Mr. Kentaro Sonoura congratulated President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his assumption of Office, and stated that the two countries share common views on an array of issues of mutual interest, specifically on issues related to the international arena. 

Moreover, President Solih and Mr. Sonoura discussed ways of further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, and on exploring further areas of cooperation, including healthcare assistance, military partnership and basic infrastructure development.

Mr. Kentaro Sonoura also expressed hope and confidence to continue working closely with the Maldives, and further consolidating the existing relations between the two countries.

His Excellency Kentaro Sonoura, Adviser to the Prime Minister of Japan, who is on a one-day official visit to the Maldives, called on His Excellency Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs, this morning.  

During the meeting, Minister Shahid noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1967, Maldives and Japan have enjoyed a dynamic relationship, anchored on mutual trust, understanding and respect, and that Mr. Sonoura’s visit to the Maldives so early in the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih signifies the importance that Japan attaches to furthering its relationship with the Maldives. Minister Shahid further expressed hope that this visit is the beginning of more high level exchange of visits between the two countries in the months to come.

The Special Advisor highlighted the importance that the Government of Japan attaches to furthering its relationship with the Maldives, especially in terms of assisting the Maldives in its socio-economic development.

Both the Foreign Minister and the Special Advisor agreed on the  importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific region and hence explored avenues to work together, in line with Japan’s “Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy” (or FOIP Strategy). The FOIP Strategy articulates Japan’s commitment to promote stability and prosperity in the region, through connectivity projects, capacity building and maritime security cooperation in order to develop the region as an ‘international public good.’

Special Advisor Mr Sonoura is accompanied by a delegation of fifteen members, comprising of senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Ministry of Economy and Trade and Industry, Ministry of Defense, Japan Coast Guard, Global Environment Centre Foundation and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
